Kristin Herzog, paintings (Monroe Parlors)

Kristin Herzog grew up on the coast of Massachusetts and now lives in Northern Virginia. She enjoys both realistic and abstract work and experiments in different media. She has received numerous awards, and her work has been juried into over 68 shows in 19 states across the United States. In 2011 she was awarded first place at the Georgia Watercolor Society’s 32nd National Exhibition.

She has a BA from Sweet Briar College where she studied under Loren Oliver and took classes with Bauhaus artist Kurt Kranz. Her MFA is from George Washington University, with additional graduate training at the School of Visual Arts in New York City. She was a fellow at the Virginia Center for Creative Arts (VCCA) in 2010 and 2012. In 2011 she was selected for overseas residencies in France and Spain. “My paintings explore the personal impact of symbols, icons and iconic concepts on human emotion,” says Herzog. For instance what feelings does the single word ‘party’ bring forth? Or the phrases ‘strings attached’ or ‘seeing red’? I have found it interesting to explore the breadth of personal thoughts and feelings that come to be attached to one small word or symbol used within our culture. The meanings can be personal, universal or mixed.
