Actress June Lockhart is best known for portraying iconic maternal figures in television series set in American’s heartland (Lassie, Petticoat Junction) and far-flung galaxies (Lost in Space). In addition to a 70-year career filled with theatre, film, and television work, Lockhart has a number of other professional and personal interests—some of which might surprise those who know her only as the ultimate TV mom.

June Lockhart will talk about her work as an actress and those wide-ranging interests Wednesday, February 15, at 5:30 pm as part of the Arts Club of Washington’s Evening With Extraordinary Artists series.

Lockhart’s years as a television space traveler sparked an interest in real-life space exploration, and she has been an active supporter of NASA for decades. She’s attended shuttle launches and played a number of roles with the agency, including hosting the opening of the Johnson Space Center for Children in Houston and participating in a Kennedy Center salute to the Apollo Program’s 40th anniversary in 2009.

June Lockhart also has a longtime interest in politics and political journalism and has attended many White House press briefings since 1950. She is a member of the Radio and Television News Directors Association and supports the organization’s scholarship fund.

Guests from several areas of June Lockhart’s lively and interesting life will join her in conversation at Arts Club: Emil de Cou, NSO@Wolf Trap Festival conductor, with whom she appeared at the Apollo tribute; Robert Jacobs, NASA’s deputy associate administrator for communication; and Bert Ulrich of NASA’s Headquarters Office of Public Affairs, an Arts Club member.

The evening begins with wine and hors d’oeuvres at 5:30 pm. The program takes place at 6:15, and is followed by more socializing and a chance to meet June Lockhart and the panelists. The cost is $20. Please reserve by calling 202 331-7282, ext. 16, by 3 pm on Tuesday, February 14.

October 2011 President’s Letter

As of this writing, September is fading with fond memories of an exceptional month for the Arts Club. To begin, we had our memorable retrospective exhibit of the works of Mathilde Mueden Leisenring, one of our founding members. Special accolades to Pat Moore, the exhibit’s Curator. Secondly, we had an extraordinary exhibit of contemporary art entitled “Hanoi 1000,” an exhibit sponsored by Vietnam’s Ambassador to the United Nations and curated by Raquelle Azran, an expert on Vietnamese art. The exhibit was accompanied by a workshop given by Professor Trinh Tuan from the Hanoi Academy of Fine Arts. Our annual Bristor Dinner was entertained by the area’s newest company, the talented Hub Opera Ensemble. As of this writing, the Club has gained 25 new members since the month of June, the largest gain of members for such a short period in recent history! Lastly, our state-of-the-art(s) website has grown phenomenally popular with 500-600 visitations per day!! We are rapidly becoming “The” site to visit in the Washington area for information on the arts. Many thanks to our website team, Henry Sienkiewicz, Skip Keats et al for their time and effort. And many thanks to all Club members and friends for your help and support.

We anticipate a great end of September and October. Please visit our website often to keep up-to-date with our enriching programs in the arts and special camaraderie.

All of the best,
Jack Hannula
