Paintings by Stephen Moore
November 4, 2011 to November 26, 2011
Monroe Parlor
Stephen Moore was raised in the South, where he has been making artwork in various media since childhood. He work has been seen in more than 100 exhibitions throughout the United States, Latin America, and Europe. Moore holds a BFA from Memphis State University and an MFA from the University of Florida in Gainesville.
Moore thinks of his work as colored by the landscape and a Southern upbringing, but he notes that it is not solely—if indeed, at all—about any particular geographical location. He cites influences including “landscapes, animals, nature and natural forces (most often those beyond the control of man, such as tornadoes), metaphysical subjects, such as the I Ching and astrology, Eastern religions, philosophy, poetry, film, music and art” and creators ranging from Cornell to Fellini to Van Gogh.
