Hanoi 1000: Contemporary Art from Vietnam

September 9, 2011 to September 30, 2011

McFeeley Gallery

In October 2010, the city of Hanoi marked the thousandth anniversary of its founding. To recognize that millennial year, the Arts Club hosts an exhibition of contemporary art from the collection of curator Raquelle Azran. Vietnamese art is defined by its lush colors and directness, as well as by its poetic, dreamlike meditativeness. Stylistic elements of Impressionism, Expressionism, figurative art, Cubism, and Fauvism intermingle with traditional Vietnamese motifs and values. The juxtaposition of handmade rice paper and traditional lacquer painting with contemporary techniques such as oil and acrylic creates an exciting fusion of temporal and cultural worlds.
